The first Afghan Cameleers


Abdul Wade (Wahid), an Afghan camel merchant & businessman, who arrived in 1879, is the first Afghan entrepreneur/investor in Australia. In 1890s Abdul Wade landed 750 camels at Port Augusta, South Australia via Bourke Camel Carrying Co. for railway const. & mining purposes. An Afghan settlement, with a mosque as its central focus, developed on the outskirts of Bourke 1888-1889, where Abdul Wade had his house.
